Insurance for Civil Contractors

Civil sites carry heavy risk and the cover reflects it. Public and products liability is essential given the plant, excavation and public exposure, and you will typically need contract works cover, plant and machinery cover for owned and hired equipment, and motor cover for trucks and floats. Workers' compensation is non-negotiable for your crews. With many policies renewing around 30 June, review your cover before the new financial year so your plant, jobs and people are all properly protected.

Common questions

Civil Contractors — insurance questions

Do I need cover for hired-in plant?

Yes. Hired plant is usually your responsibility while it is on your site, so plant and machinery cover should extend to hired-in equipment as well as owned gear. Confirm this before mobilising on a big job.

What about the works themselves?

Contract works (or construction) cover protects the job in progress against damage from events like storms or fire before handover. On long civil jobs that exposure is significant, so it is worth confirming alongside your liability cover.
