ABN Reactivation

Prepare to reactivate an ABN by checking business status, trading activity, contact details, and supporting records.

Overview

ABN Reactivation explained

ABN reactivation is the process of bringing a previously cancelled Australian Business Number back into use when you start trading again. If your ABN was cancelled while you paused or closed, you can reactivate or re-apply through the Australian Business Register once you are entitled to one again.

Reactivation is not automatic. You need to be carrying on, or genuinely intending to carry on, an enterprise, and the register will expect your details to reflect that. Getting your records and details in order first makes the process much smoother.

Cockatoo helps you prepare for reactivation by gathering the information you will need and reminding you to confirm your details before you apply. We do not reactivate the ABN ourselves, but we help you walk in ready.

What to check

Key points

  • Reactivation applies to an ABN that was previously cancelled, not one that is simply dormant.
  • You generally need to be running, or about to run, an enterprise to be entitled again.
  • Your old details may be out of date and should be reviewed before you reactivate.
  • If the same ABN cannot be reactivated, a fresh application may be required instead.

Before you start

What you'll need

  • The cancelled ABN you intend to reactivate, if you still have it on record.
  • Evidence or a clear description of the trading activity you are resuming.
  • Updated business and postal addresses and current contact details.
  • Your entity and structure details as they stand now.
  • Records of when and why the ABN was originally cancelled.
  • Your tax file number or entity identifiers to support the application.

Process

How it works

  1. Confirm your previous ABN and check its cancelled status.
  2. Verify you are entitled by reviewing your current or planned trading.
  3. Gather updated contact, address and activity details.
  4. Apply to reactivate the ABN, or lodge a fresh application if needed.
  5. Review your reinstated details once the ABN is active again.

Avoid these

Common mistakes

  • Trying to reactivate before any genuine trading activity has resumed.
  • Carrying old, incorrect details across into the reactivated record.
  • Assuming reactivation happens automatically the moment you start again.
  • Overlooking that a new application may be needed rather than a reactivation.

Common questions

ABN Reactivation FAQs

How does ABN reactivation work?

ABN reactivation brings a cancelled ABN back into use when you are entitled to one again, usually because you have resumed trading. You apply through the Australian Business Register, and in some cases a new application is required rather than reactivating the old number.

Do I need to be trading before I reactivate?

You generally need to be carrying on an enterprise or genuinely intending to start very soon. Reactivating an ABN with no real activity behind it can put your entitlement in question.

Will I get my old ABN back or a new one?

Often the same ABN can be reactivated, which keeps your history consistent. In some circumstances a new ABN is issued instead. Checking your previous record first helps you know which path applies.

What should I check before reactivating?

Confirm your entitlement, update your contact and address details, and have your entity and identifier records ready. Cockatoo helps you assemble these before you apply so the reactivation goes smoothly.
