Term life insurance: benefit, period and renewal terms

Term life insurance generally concerns a death benefit under a contract for a specified duration or subject to its renewal and expiry terms. The insured person, beneficiary arrangements, exclusions and premium structure still need to be identified.

The distinction that matters

A term policy’s death benefit is not ordinarily described by the cash-value features of overseas investment-linked life products. Do not assume the policy creates a savings balance or a surrender payment.

What to check

  • The insured benefit and expiry conditions.
  • Premium review and indexation.
  • Excluded causes and initial-period terms.
  • Ownership and beneficiary arrangements.

Example to discuss

If the cover is intended to support a family while debts remain, compare the term and benefit with that purpose and check what happens at renewal or expiry.

This is a hypothetical comparison, not a customer claim or a determination of cover.
