An insurance underwriter assesses proposed risks and the terms on which an insurer may accept them. The role is different from a broker assisting a customer or a claims professional assessing a reported loss.
The distinction that matters
An initial indication of price is not necessarily a final acceptance. Additional information, conditions or changes to the proposed risk can affect the underwriting decision.
What to check
- Information and documents still required.
- The accepted description of the risk.
- Conditions attached to the offer.
- Who confirms commencement of cover.
Example to discuss
When the business adds a new activity, ask whether the existing underwriter has accepted it rather than assuming the old occupation description automatically extends.
This is a hypothetical comparison, not a customer claim or a determination of cover.
