Homeowners insurance: building, contents and liability

Homeowners insurance is a broad label for arrangements that may include a home's building, contents and specified liability. In Australia those interests can be insured separately or together, depending on the product.

The distinction that matters

The land’s market price is not automatically a rebuilding cost. Nor does building insurance necessarily protect every household possession or business activity conducted at home.

What to check

  • Rebuilding and contents valuation bases.
  • Insured events and natural-hazard definitions.
  • Liability, temporary accommodation and sublimits.
  • Renovations, occupancy and home-business disclosures.

Example to discuss

Ask separately what happens to the building and belongings after an insured event, and identify which policy section would fund each cost.

This is a hypothetical comparison, not a customer claim or a determination of cover.
