Surplus lines is a US insurance-market classification involving particular placements outside the standard admitted market under US rules. It is not an Australian insurer licence category.
The distinction that matters
Australian authorisation, offshore placement rules and policyholder protections must be checked separately. A US surplus-lines label does not prove that a provider may offer a product in Australia.
What to check
- The legal insurer and country of issue.
- The broker’s role and authorisation.
- Applicable placement and complaint arrangements.
- Any exclusions from local protection schemes.
Example to discuss
If a proposal refers to a non-admitted or surplus-lines insurer, request the exact entity and jurisdiction and obtain advice appropriate to the Australian placement.
This is a hypothetical comparison, not a customer claim or a determination of cover.
