What the US NAIC does: a distinction for Australian insurance readers

The NAIC serves US insurance commissioners; it is not an Australian licensing authority.

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) supports US insurance commissioners with expertise, data and analysis. Its official About page describes that role.

Why jurisdiction matters

A reference to NAIC material does not establish an insurer’s permission to operate in Australia or a broker’s Australian authorisation. US industry data can help explain US terminology, but it does not replace Australian policy documents and regulatory checks.

Questions when researching a provider

Identify the legal entity behind the offer, the country of the policy and the regulator responsible for the activity. Ask the provider where its licence or authorisation can be verified. A brand name or association reference is not enough.

An Australian starting point

For general consumer information, use ASIC’s Moneysmart insurance guides. For a business enquiry, ask the provider to explain its role and disclosure documents before relying on advice. Cockatoo’s insurance pages offer information and a referral enquiry; they do not certify a provider’s regulatory status.
