FDIC and Australia’s Financial Claims Scheme: check which protection applies

FDIC is a US scheme. Australian account holders should check APRA’s Financial Claims Scheme.

“FDIC insured” describes US deposit protection. It should not be used as a promise that an Australian savings account is protected by the US government.

The Australian starting point

APRA’s Financial Claims Scheme information explains Australian protection for eligible deposits and certain general insurance claims if a covered institution fails. Its deposit checker and institution information help you investigate whether an account is within the scheme.

Check the institution and account

A banking brand, app or product name is not enough to establish protection. Check the legal institution behind the account, the type of account and the scheme’s conditions. Do not assume a financial app, investment account or overseas account has the same protection as an eligible Australian bank deposit.

Separate the schemes

Question Where to check
Is my Australian deposit protected? APRA’s Financial Claims Scheme and deposit checker
Does a US account have FDIC coverage? The FDIC and the US institution’s official account documentation
Does an investment loss qualify? The product documents and the relevant scheme rules; do not assume deposit protection applies

We do not certify individual accounts as protected. Ask the institution for written clarification and check the official scheme before moving money based on a protection claim. This guide does not recommend an account or financial product.
