Prestonsburg is a city in Floyd County, Kentucky, United States. It is the county seat of Floyd County. The population was 3,255 at the 2010 census. The city was founded in 1797 by Colonel John Preston, for whom it is named. It is located along the Levisa Fork of the Big Sandy River. Prestonsburg is the largest city in the Eastern Kentucky Coalfield region. The city is home to the Mountain Arts Center, a regional performing arts center, and the Jenny Wiley Theatre, a professional summer stock theater. Prestonsburg is also home to the Kentucky Opry, a live country music show. The city is served by the Prestonsburg City School District.
