Melbourne is the capital and most populous city of the Australian state of Victoria, and the second most populous city in Australia and Oceania. The city is located on the large natural bay of Port Phillip and expands into the hinterlands towards the Dandenong and Macedon mountain ranges, Mornington Peninsula and Yarra Valley. Melbourne consists of 31 municipalities and has a population of 4.9 million as of 2019. It has a humid subtropical climate and is known for its rich culture, art, music, theatre, and comedy. The city is home to many of Australia’s most iconic attractions, such as the Royal Botanic Gardens, the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the National Gallery of Victoria, and the Melbourne Zoo. It is also home to a number of universities, including the University of Melbourne, Monash University, and RMIT University.
