Rockdale County is a county located in the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 85,215. The county seat is Conyers. Rockdale County is included in the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell, GA Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Rockdale County was created on October 18, 1870 from parts of Newton and Henry counties and was named for Rockdale Church, which was located in what is now Milstead. The county was developed for cotton plantations, which depended on the labor of enslaved African Americans.
The county is governed by a five-member Board of Commissioners, which is elected from single-member districts. The county is also served by a sheriff, district attorney, probate judge, clerk of superior court, and other county officials.
The county is home to several parks and recreational areas, including Panola Mountain State Park, which offers hiking, camping, and other outdoor activities. The county also has several museums, including the Rockdale County Historical Society Museum, which features artifacts and exhibits related to the county’s history.
