South Yarra is a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 4km south-east of Melbourne’s Central Business District. Its local government area is the City of Stonnington. At the 2016 Census, South Yarra had a population of 19,134.
South Yarra is one of Melbourne’s most affluent and densely populated suburbs. It is home to some of Melbourne’s most expensive real estate and some of the city’s best shopping, restaurants and cafes. It is also home to the Royal Botanic Gardens, the Shrine of Remembrance and the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
The area was originally inhabited by the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation. The area was first settled by Europeans in the 1830s and was originally known as South Yarraville. The suburb was renamed South Yarra in 1856.
The suburb is well known for its shopping, with the main shopping strip located along Chapel Street. It is also home to many of Melbourne’s best restaurants, cafes and bars. South Yarra is also home to many of Melbourne’s most prestigious schools, including Melbourne Grammar School, Melbourne Girls Grammar, Melbourne High School and Scotch College.
