Parramatta is a major suburb of Sydney, Australia, located in the Greater Western Sydney region. It is located approximately 23 kilometres west of the Sydney central business district on the banks of the Parramatta River. Parramatta is the administrative seat of the City of Parramatta, one of the oldest local government areas in Australia. The Parramatta area has been inhabited for thousands of years by the Burramattagal, a Darug people. The Darug people are a coastal Aboriginal nation who spoke the Eora language. The name Parramatta is derived from the Aboriginal word for “the place where the eels lie”.
Parramatta is a major commercial and retail centre, and is home to Westfield Parramatta, the largest shopping centre in Australia. It is also home to a number of cultural institutions, including the Parramatta Heritage and Visitor Information Centre, the Parramatta Stadium, the Riverside Theatres, and the Parramatta Park. The suburb is also home to a number of educational institutions, including the University of Western Sydney, the University of Technology Sydney, and the Australian Catholic University.
